Few things keep club committees busier than the question: who will coach our youth teams next season? These seven tips make the search easier.
1. Start early
Most coaching changes happen in spring for the new season. If you only start looking in June, you are competing with every other club. Start your search three to four months before the season begins.
2. Look within your own circle
Parents, former youth players or players from the senior teams are often the best candidates. Approach them directly – many are just waiting to be asked.
3. Describe the role clearly
Team level, training days, match days, weekly workload and any compensation: the clearer the opening, the more likely the right people will respond.
4. Offer training
Many don’t dare to take on a coaching role because they lack training. Offer to support courses such as J+S or UEFA C. That lowers the barrier considerably.
5. Think in pairs
Two people share one team: that spreads the workload, ensures cover and makes it easier for newcomers to start.
6. Make the opening visible
A post in the club group gets lost quickly. Also publish your opening somewhere permanently visible – for example for free on CoachMatch, where coaches specifically search for open positions.
7. Show appreciation
Youth coaches mostly volunteer. A thank-you event, good equipment and an open ear on the committee keep them at the club for the long term.
